From Kimberly Watson, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility chief: This month’s PULSE Check topic is “Combating Sameness.” I found this quote by an unknown author that I believe is a good reminder: “Do not underestimate yourself by comparing yourself with others. It’s our differences that make us unique and beautiful.” Differences do not equate to deficiencies. Here is a short video titled: “RISE into Allyship.” You can view it at Percipio Course Becoming a DEI Ally and Agent for Change. Focus on using the RISE model – respect, include, support, engage.

The Air Force e-learning site has migrated to Percipio: https://usaf.percipio.com/admin/areas/f0598f64-1868-440c-b4c7-96a935742b55/subjects. You can visit to learn more about diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility topics.

Wright-Patterson Women’s Initiative Team – Open to all genders, ranks, civilian and military personnel. Meetings are held the second Tuesday each month at 10 a.m. on Teams and in person. We are focusing on the following lines of effort: 1. Supporting women in the workplace. 2. Resources for women’s health (contraceptives, nursing mothers, family support). 3. Women’s fitness research. We support Air Force and Air Force Materiel Command WIT efforts. For questions or more information, email WPAFB.WomensInitiativeTeam@us.af.mil.

WIT is a Special Emphasis Program under the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Directorate’s Affirmative Employment Program at Wright-Patterson AFB. Special emphasis programs enhance employment and cultural awareness of protected groups and support Affirmative Employment Program and equal opportunity initiatives by helping address professional development, advancement and training of underrepresented groups, so they have the chance to reach their full-employment potential.

WIT champion: Kimberly Parrett

Job Shadow Day mentors needed – sign up by Sept. 22 – Every fall and spring, the WPAFB Educational Outreach Office sponsors a Job Shadow Day for high school juniors and seniors that allows them to learn firsthand about the many exciting careers available at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The next one is set for Oct. 27 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The day starts at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, which is where you’ll meet and pick up your student(s). Students will be paired with their mentors for a day of shadowing. This can include visiting your job site, introducing students to your colleagues, viewing a special project or arranging a tour. The students are thirsty to know what base personnel do and what kind of education is required to pursue such careers. Mentors return students to the museum at 2:30 p.m.

What does it take to be a mentor?

A person excited about their job and willing to tell students about it. Each mentor will be responsible for transporting the students to and from job sites, as well as providing the overall job shadow experience.

Note: As a mentor, it is up to you to secure any necessary permissions or clearances to bring students on base and into your work area.

How do I sign up?

It’s EASY! Register at 2023 Fall Job Shadow Day - 27 October 2023 Survey (surveymonkey.com). Deadline for volunteering is Sept. 22 so the career list can be assembled and the announcement sent to local schools.

The WPAFB Educational Outreach Office will do all the pre-event work, including pairing students with mentors, registrations, and securing school and parental permissions.

Job Shadow Day always has MORE students interested than officials can accommodate, so consider volunteering as a mentor. The more mentors we have, the more students we can accommodate. Contact Kim Stultz at kimberly.stultz.ctr@us.af.mil or 937-938-4861 if you have any questions, concerns or need additional information. Check out the attached “Job Shadow Day” flyer for details.

NOTE: Schedules are subject to change due to low enrollment or delays.
