(AFRL Image) Lightweight Megawatt Generator Comes Through in Demonstration by Dr. Thomas Brown Propulsion 11/30/2011 - WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- The Air Force Research Laboratory and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III industry partner Electrodynamics Associates, Inc. demonstrated a multi-megawatt, high speed (15,000 rpm) generator to 25 members of industry and the Department of Defense. The demonstration showed 10X power improvement for its weight/package (under 500 lbs) over existing state-of-the-art generators. The generator is intended to supply power through a compact package for directed energy applications and for supplying megawatt power to aircraft with increasing load and mission requirements. The generator's rated peak power is 2.5MW.
