7/24/2011 - WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- A severe thunderstorm passing through the Miami Valley at approximately 3 p.m., July 24 caused some injuries and property damage as preparations were being made for the Jet World Masters championship competition on the grounds of National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
Heavy winds blew over a large tent damaging the structure and injuring two individuals inside. A man and a woman were transported to Miami Valley Hospital with what were termed minor injuries by witnesses on the scene.
"We're hopeful that the two individuals taken to the hospital will be fine and soon able to return for the championships," said retired Lt. Gen. Jack Hudson, Museum Director. "I'm very grateful for the fast reaction of everyone on scene and the response of the emergency crews."
Some of the jet powered scale models were damaged as well. The extent of all property damage is unknown at this time. Wright-Patterson Security Forces are conducting an investigation of the incident.
Initial reports attribute all injuries and damage to winds. There were no reports of damage due to lightning.
Event organizers expect the championships will begin on July 27 as originally planned. More than 50 pilots from 16 different countries will compete during the event, which is scheduled to run until Aug. 6.
