April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base continues to focus on creating the appropriate culture to eliminate sexual assault. Wright-Patt’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response team has numerous events planned for the base community, including seminars, exhibits, bowling and various outreach displays around the installation with free promotional items.

The SAPR team is seeking anonymous voices for the 2nd annual “What Were You Wearing?” exhibit that will take place April 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the USO. If you would like to anonymously share your story, fill out the SAPR office Google form with your testimonial at https://forms.gle/XcMn45zi6CvWsWG56. You can also reach out directly to the SAPR office, and any conversation will be completely confidential. *The Google form must be accessed from an off-network computer.

Additional SAAPM event details forthcoming. All events aim to promote and highlight acts that bolster prevention, increase reporting and promote advocacy for a safer workplace community.

For questions about Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month activities, contact the SAPR office at 937-257-7272 or visit www.wpafb.af.mil/units/sapr.

About the exhibit: The idea behind this powerful exhibit came about after Dr. Wyandt-Hiebert and Ms. Brockman, sexual assault advocates, attended a conference and read a poem titled “What I Was Wearing” by Mary Simmerling. They were so moved by the poem they decided to create an event that turned it into a visual representation. The advocates produced a survivor’s art installation called “What Were You Wearing?” The first was held at the University of Arkansas in 2014. Students participated by sharing brief descriptions of what they were wearing when they were sexually assaulted, as well as clothing replicas. The installation’s intent was to show people that changing one’s clothes will not stop sexual abuse.

It is an unfortunate-but-all-too-familiar question asked of sexual assault survivors by law enforcement, attorneys, friends, communities and others. It’s rooted in victim-blaming culture and the rape myth that survivors “cause” or provoke perpetrators due to their behavior. That is not only in how they dress but if they drank alcohol, consumed drugs, had “flirtatious” behavior and many other statements shifting blame. The reality is nothing a survivor does invites sexual assault. The only cause of sexual assault is, in fact, a perpetrator making a choice to hurt another.

SAPR’s goal: To challenge the belief that clothes a person wears determines how likely they are to be sexually assaulted. Not only will this exhibit bring visual awareness to the issue, but it also provides an opportunity for real-life stories to be told through art. The SAPR team hopes that not only will this exhibit bring visual impact, but also provide a source of healing as you are able to speak your truth through art, impacting others in the community.

EARN BENEFITS THROUGH PUBLIC-TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM

If you’re concerned about the high cost of gasoline, traffic congestion or air pollution, you may be interested in the Mass Transportation Benefit Program.

MTBP makes it possible for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base personnel to be reimbursed up to $245 a month for utilizing public transportation as a means to travel to and from work.

The program is open to all civilian employees (appropriated and nonappropriated), military members and reservists on active duty. Contractors are not eligible.

The Mass Transportation Benefit Program is limited to vanpools, Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority and Greene CATS Public Transit riders. Carpools do not meet reimbursement criteria.

Compensation is paid in the form of vouchers and debit cards funded through the Department of Transportation, 88th Force Support Squadron officials said. Personnel normally receive vouchers on a quarterly basis and must sign for them.

Registration and program participation are simple. An eligible employee or service member adhering to all governing rules and regulations via public transportation submits an application package to Program Manager Shawnetta White of the 88 FSS Civilian Personnel Office, who will forward it to DOT.

To obtain an application or more information, contact her at shawnetta.white@us.af.mil or 937-904-3272.

From Kimberly Watson, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility chief: I wanted to share this short video titled “Start here: If you are human, you have bias”: Percipio video – Start here: If you are human, you have bias. Remember, unconscious bias is not a bad thing! We all have biases, although it’s sometimes difficult to admit or accept. Yet recognizing unconscious biases can help us engage with others and form better connections. In the words of the late Mary Parker Follett, American management consultant, social worker, philosopher, and pioneer in the fields of organizational theory and behavior: “Unity, not uniformity, must be our aim.
