High Altitude Effects Research Volunteers Needed ($150/mo): Help us provide aircraft pilots, other aircrew members, high altitude parachute personnel, and astronauts with the best equipment and procedures to accomplish their missions while dealing with the effects of being at high altitude.

The 711th Human Performance Wing is conducting human subject training in the altitude chamber facilities at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH to provide qualified volunteers for DoD-wide-applicable research and equipment test and evaluation.  Volunteers are needed now to become members of the High Altitude Chamber Human Subject Panel (HAC HSP).  HAC HSP procedures, as well as those for research supported by the HAC HSP, are reviewed by the Air Force Research Laboratory Institutional Review Board (AFRL IRB), an independent ethics and regulatory committee.

If you volunteer for the HAC HSP, you will receive $150/mo Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay during the training and for the duration of your membership on the panel for each month in which you take an altitude chamber “flight,” and participate in critical USAF-related research.  You may quit at any time for any reason. Volunteers must be active duty military (or guardsmen or reservists on active duty orders), 22-55 yrs of age, 5’0’’- 6’4’’ tall, 88-298 lbs, and meet other entrance criteria, which we will explain when you contact us at 711HPW.HSP@US.AF.MIL.

NAMRU-D HAS MULTIPLE RESEARCH STUDIES NEEDING PARTICIPANTS – The Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory at Naval Medical Research Unit-Dayton conducts human-subject research to better understand and mitigate challenges and threats aerospace-operational environments pose to service members. Research areas include visual and auditory sciences, acceleration, altitude effects, motion sickness, vestibular function, en route patient care, back and neck pain and injury, and more. We are located on Wright-Patterson AFB, area B, bldg. 851.

  • Compensation and/or other incentives are usually provided for the volunteer’s time (DoD and federal employees must be on leave or off duty status to receive compensation and any applicable bonus. See exception below).

    • Off-duty DoD and federal employees: may earn the full compensation.

    • On-duty DoD and federal employees: may receive up to $50 per blood draw (if required, not required in all studies). Additionally, select studies offer Hazard Duty Incentive Pay (HDIP) of $150/month.

  • Opportunities are open to the public and military community, provided individual study qualifications are met.

IV insertion under degraded vision. Performance will be measured after the administration of
an FDA-approved eye drop that constricts the pupil and impacts focus. Participants will perform multiple IV catheter placements into a training arm using no correction, Night Vision Devices, and adjustable focus spectacles.
Compensation: $700 for full study completion. DoD and Federal employees must be on leave oroff duty status to receive compensation.
Time commitment: 8 visits, about 2 hours each visit
Qualifications: IV insertion experience; Ages 18-30; 20/40 or better (near) visual acuity; US citizen

Individual Differences in Hypoxia. You will breathe normal air or hypoxic air through a mask while wearing an EEG or fNIRS cap and performing different tasks.
Compensation: Up to $500. $50 per blood sample (finger stick x1, blood draw from hand x8) plus a $50 completion bonus. DoD and Federal employees must be on leave or off-duty status to receive bonus.
Time commitment: 5 separate visits; 2 hours each.

Autogenic Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE) as a Countermeasure to Cybersickness. This study evaluates the effect of AFTE as a strategy to mitigate cybersickness.

Time commitment: 5 to 7 visits (approx. 2-3 hours each).

Investigating The Use of Dimenhydrinate as an Effective Cybersickness Countermeasure. This study examines the effects of antinausea medications on the adaptation to virtual reality (VR) environments.

Time commitment: 5 consecutive visits, approx. 1.5 hours each

Help researchers study the effect of the Anti-G Straining Maneuver (AGSM) on neck strain. You will conduct a series of Anti-G Straining Maneuvers while under normal gravity.

Help researchers study long term injuries related to parachute landings. You will conduct a series movement tasks (drop landing, lateral cross-jump, jog) while wearing a weighted vest.

Volunteers needed for a study to identify acceptable breathing system performance in the cockpit. You will breathe from an aircraft regulator and mask under different conditions and answer questions about how it felt to breathe.

Help researchers create aviator assessments in Virtual Reality. You will perform several tasks in VR while we assess performance and physiology, then answer questions about your experience.

WHAT: HOPE is a peer-to-peer resilience initiative where specialists work to set a positive example for peers, build bridges to helping agencies, model spiritual fitness and serve others. HOPE focuses on leadership development, character formation, embedded resources, spiritual fitness, community service and peer connection.
HOW: Participation will require completion of the application (including commander signature), an interview and final approval from the HOPE Religious Support Team before attending.
WHO: Enlisted and officers who fall under the 88th Air Base Wing.

Air Force Institute of Technology: Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
Prairies Chapel: Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m. 

Eucharistic Adoration:
Prairies Chapel: Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Reconciliation: Before and after weekend Mass, confession is heard in the Blessed Sacrament Room of Prairies Chapel. You may also schedule an appointment.

Faith study: Tuesday at 10 a.m., Thursday at 6 p.m., Prairies Chapel Community Center

Blue Streak Time Trial: The Blue Streak Time Trial has operated annually since 1998 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The 10-mile loop course takes cyclists on a scenic route the second Tuesday each month through October. Group Run every Monday at Skeel Avenue: Join us every Monday at 4 p.m. on the Skeel Avenue running path at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (Area A) for the Air Force Marathon Group Run. All are welcome to run or walk the distance of your choice on the 2.2-mile out-and-back stretch. Each way is 1.1 miles. A portable restroom is available on-site. Don’t forget to bring your own hydration and nutrition, as needed. See you Monday afternoons, rain, or shine!

The Wright-Patterson Main Exchange Mall is open to anyone with base access. The Exchange is located on Area A, in Kittyhawk Center on Birch Street.  All Military, Military Dependents, Disabled Veterans (with proper identification) and DOD Civilians have shopping privileges within all Exchange Facilities.  Contractors and all others with base access can utilize all Exchange Services and Food establishments. 

The Wright-Patterson Exchange offers unattended retail units to provide fast, convenient options to installations worldwide. The self-serve stores offer an assortment found in most Expresses, including snacks, drinks, fresh fruit, ready-to-eat meals, toiletries and more.

How to Submit

Submissions must be sent to the 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Office at 88ABW.PA.Bulletin@us.af.mil. The subject line must include “Weekly Bulletin input.”
Information 88 ABW/PA is looking for includes:
  1. Base-wide events
  2. Special events (holiday, special observances, training, etc.)
  3. Airmen/family-oriented events
  4. And anything important for base-wide Airmen to know.
Please provide name of event/topic, applicable dates/times, and location or venue – along with 2-4 sentences of background/context. Submissions should also include phone/email contact and any weblink, if available.
