AFRL Research at the South Pole
Capt. Michael Nayak, an AFRL scientist, at the Ceremonial South Pole with the South Pole Traverse (SPT) in the background. Several groups of trucks, bulldozers and Sno-Cats (tracked vehicles for snowy conditions) pull massive sleds with supplies from McMurdo Station to the South Pole Station. Each sled holds 20,000 gallons, or 140,000 pounds, of jet fuel. Every year, workers rebuild the thousand mile-road that supports this journey. (Courtesy photo)
