The Turbulence and Aerosol Research Dynamic Interrogation System, or TARDIS, laser

The Turbulence and Aerosol Research Dynamic Interrogation System, or TARDIS, laser is fired into the night sky above the John Bryan State Park observatory May 24, 2018. Scientists from the Electro-Optical Space Situational Awareness Team at the Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate then analyze data returned by backscattered light to study turbulence in the atmosphere, thereby allowing for a better capability of imaging objects in space.
