Col. Juan Alvarez is congratulated by a fellow runner after he completed the full marathon Sept. 19, 2009, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The U.S. Air Force Marathon attracted nearly 10,000 runners. Colonel Alvarez lost his left leg in 1996 when the MH-53 helicopter he was flying crashed during a special operations counter-narcotics mission over central America. Colonel Alvarez is now the U.S. air attaché to Bolivia. (Air Force photo/Ted Theopolos)
