The photo shows hydrothermal vents in the ocean where life has been shown to grow at temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Celsius. The team of Dr. Frank Robb is studying organisms that thrive in such conditions, with the goal of understanding hhow to make biological materials more robust in the face of extreme temperature. AFOSR is funding Robb’s work through its biophysical mechanisms research portfolio. Robb works at the Center of Marine Biotechnology, University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
