Vanden Research
The graphic above represents an actual explosively formed penetrator (EFP) in flight at sea level conditions. The body shape starts as a flat plate and forms during flight. Dr. Kirk Vanden, technical advisor at the computational mechanics branch of the munitions directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory, and his team are currently performing calculations to study aerodynamic stability of complex shapes undergoing real-time dynamic deformation. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research provides funding for this research. (Graphic provided by David Lambert, AFRL/MNMW).
