Using quatum simulations to identify failure modes allws Professor Emily Carter and team to then design improved protective (thermal & corrosion barrier) coatings. Ceramic coatings (as illustrated above) protect turbine engines from heat and corrosion, but have limited lifetime. Carter's team uses computer-aided materials design to find ways to extend coating lifetimes.
