President Barack Obama announced his plan to lift the nearly 20 year executive ban on oil and natural gas drilling off the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, March 31, at Joint Base Andrews, Md. During the speech, President Obama acknowledged the military's leadership in nuturing development of renewable biofuels. He noted the Air Force's successful first flight of an aircraft on all engines burning a biofuel. That demonstration by an A-10 Thunderbolt powered by a blend of conventional JP-8 and a biomass fuel derived from the camelina plant took place March 25 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. He also announced the Navy will flight test the F/A-18F Super Hornet pictured, dubbed "The Green Hornet," on Earth Day, April 22. If successful, it will be the first fighter to reach supersonic speed with a 50/50 blend of Hydrotreated Renewable Jet and JP-8 fuel. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Perry Aston)
