Lt Col (Dr.) Mark Duffy, Chief, Operational Support Section, Epidemiology Consult Service with the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) interviews a family on Yap Island in Micronesia as part of the investigation of an outbreak of the rare Zika virus. The team’s results showed that 73 percent of the populations of the island were likely infected. The paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine was recognized by the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) division of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as an outstanding paper in the field of assessment in Epidemiology on Aug 24, 2010.
