Officials have named the F-35A 'Lightning II' as the 2014 featured aircraft for the Air Force Marathon.

The multi-role fighters are produced by Lockheed Martin and will be featured in the Air Force Marathon logo, medals and shirts.

"We're very excited about this year's plane," said Rob Aguiar, race director. "The featured aircraft is such an integral part of the race because it represents the impact the Air Force has had on American history."

The F-35A is part of a family of single-seat, single-engine fighters under development to perform ground attack, reconnaissance and air defense missions with stealth capability. The aircraft took its first flight on December 15, 2006.

The Air Force Marathon events are already 70 percent full, with the 10K already completely sold-out. Mr. Aguiar says that all races could sell out in April.

"We did not expect the 10K to sell out so much earlier than last year," he added, "I encourage everyone to register as soon as possible before we sell out."

"We always get phone calls from people who want into our race after we close-out," said Mr. Aguiar, "I always, always warn people to register early."

Prices for the full and half marathons are currently $90 and $75, while the 5K is $30. All race prices except the 5K will rise by $5 on April 2, if there are any spots left.

The Air Force Marathon, presented by Northrop Grumman, USAA and Boeing, will be held Sept. 20 at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Participants start and finish at the National Air Force Museum, and spectators are welcome at the museum or in downtown Fairborn.
