Renowned Neurosurgeon to Lecture on Neuromodulation for Treating Numerous Disorders Published April 4, 2014 By Michela Greco 711th Human Performance Wing WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Dr. Ali Rezai, Director of the Ohio State University's Neuroscience Program and a world leader in deep brain stimulation surgery, will be lecturing on the advancement of neuromodulation techniques for treating numerous disorders as part of the 711th Human Performance Wing Chief Scientist's Guest Lecture Series on April 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. All AFRL and Wright-Patt personnel are invited to attend his lecture in the Auditorium of Building 441, Area B. Neuromodulation, which involves the use of implantable devices that alter nervous system activity through the use of electrical stimulation, is one of the fastest growing medical specialties. Dr. Rezai has performed more than 1,700 deep brain stimulation surgeries and is one of the world's foremost experts on the use of neuromodulation to treat neurological conditions such as essential tremors, Parkinson's disease, and obsessive compulsive disorders. His current research focuses on developing neuromodulation therapies to treat other disorders such as migraines, asthma, autism, addictions, Alzheimer's, obesity, and post-traumatic stress disorders. His lecture will provide an overview of neuromodulation, including current indications, research, and future opportunities. Dr. Rezai earned his medical degree with honors from the University of Southern California and completed his neurosurgical training at New York University. He completed his subspecialty training in functional neurosurgery at the University of Toronto and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Dr. Rezai serves on the editorial board of five journals, including Neurosurgery, and has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and more than 30 book chapters. He has delivered more than 400 lectures nationally and internationally and holds over 35 U.S. patents for medical devices and technologies. He is a featured neurological expert for Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, 60 Minutes, CNN, NPR, NBC, ABC, CBS, and the BBC. In 2007, Dr. Rezai presented his work to the President of the United States as well as to members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
