The weather cooperated beautifully as 300 people showed their support for victims of sexual assault by running in the April 10 "Race for Respect" held at Bass Lake Lodge in Area A.

The race concept was organized by the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator office, which then contacted the Company Grade Officer's Council to ask if it would handle implementation.

"Next, they needed someone to serve as race director. Enter me," said 1st Lt. Brandon Hough, a contracts manager in the Operational Contracting, Construction Branch. Hough said he was pleased with the turn-out as runners limbered up in a brisk, but warm, wind and awaited the starting bell for the 5K run.

"This is really great. We had 275 people registered before race day and, today, an additional 25 showed up to register," said Hough. "I believe this is the first year for the race, but it sure looks like a success. We are very gratified that so many came out to support Sexual Assault Awareness Month."

A variety of projects have been planned and implemented on base to draw attention to the emotional and physical damage that occurs with sexual assault. The "Race for Respect" raised $1,400, which will be donated to the Air Force Aid Society.

The overall winner of the 5K was Andy Schweitzer who ran at a pace of 5.31 minutes per mile.

"He is wicked fast," Hough said. "I am not even sure he broke a sweat."

The top female runner was Jennifer Godsey, who placed fourth overall with a time of 6.34 minutes per mile.

Other top finishers included James Escobar in the No. 2 spot, and Bridger Lord at No. 3.
