Information Protection Office Awareness Month Published June 20, 2014 By Contributed story WRIGHT PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Briefing will outline area gang and drug activities Base personnel, including parents of school-age children, may learn about the Dayton-area gang and drug threat June 26 from the Montgomery County Sheriff Department. The briefing is being held in honor of June being Information Protection Awareness Month at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, organized by the 88 Air Base Wing Information Protection Office (IP). Courses and activities continue through the end of the month, and attendance has seen dozens of people attend almost every event, said Michael Hosmon, IP security specialist. "This briefing is going to give our base personnel, especially parents, more awareness of the real threat that's in the area from Dayton-area gangs and their drug activities," he said. "We were thinking about parents of middle school and high school students when we contacted the Montgomery County Sheriff Department." Deputy Brian Shiverdecker will conduct the briefing, Hosmon said. Tentative activities will include: · Computer pop-ups and e-mail messages · June 20 - Briefing "Preventative Maintenance on Safes" · June 24-26 - Leadership and Management Course · June 27 - "Destruction Day" at Bldg. 306, Area B, 2445 Monohan Way., 8 a.m. to noon, utilizing Security Engineered Machinery manufactured 23/5 Model Disintegrator; and a Security Hard Drive Disk Eraser with attached Drive Folder which is used to degauss, or erase, classified/controlled unclassified information media, then render it unusable by "folding" it. The disintegrator, a powerhouse shredder, is U.S. General Services Administration and National Security Agency approved, and environmentally friendly. It can destroy paper, compact discs and DVDs, but cannot destroy film, microfiche or metal. · June 30 - Briefing "The Insider Threat" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
