AF Marathon highlights need for daily safety, security measures Published Sept. 19, 2014 By Col. John Devillier 88th Air Base Wing commander WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Oh. -- There is an old adage: "One never gets a second chance to make a good first impression." On Sept. 20, Team Wright-Patt will have the latest opportunity to make a good impression on 15,000 participants, along with thousands of family members and friends, as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base hosts the 18th annual Air Force Marathon. A lot of preparation contributes to that first impression as an event of this magnitude generates its share of challenges. Our 2,300-plus volunteers help with many logistical challenges, such as setting up and tearing down, preparing race packages and volunteering at hydration stations on race day. Another challenge is keeping everyone safe and secure. As the host organization for Wright-Patterson AFB, this is the 88th Air Base Wing's responsibility. But the safety of our people and the security of this installation is not reserved for big events such as the Air Force Marathon... as one of my priorities, it applies each and every day. We must take care of our mission partners so they, in turn, can execute requirements in support of the warfighter. Those Airmen whom I've met during my first two months here can attest I appreciate professionalism, respect toward others and a positive attitude. I'm confident Team Wright-Patt will display these traits to our marathon visitors. At the same time, I ask that you remain vigilant. Remember, Wright-Patterson AFB is our home away from home. Treat its resources like they are your own and keep safety and security in mind. I look forward to seeing many of you near the finish line!
