A host of events supporting the 2014 Miami Valley Combined Federal Campaign have already started, with one of its largest, the annual celebratory Charity Fair and Campaign Kickoff, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 8 at Wright State University's Nutter Center. The kickoff is open to all Department of Defense, federal and U.S. Postal Service employees.

The event will include charity information booths with giveaways, games, free lunch and music, highlighted by the new "Lip Sync Battle" from 11:45 a.m. to 12: 45 p.m.

Cost is $5 per person to enter. Up to 25 entries may bring a CD with their music of one minute or less in duration.

Entrants may perform solo or in a group but must be tasteful and respectful.

Costumes are encouraged. People may vote for performers by making donations.

The winner or winners will receive a fun prize.

With a theme of "Making a Difference Together," MVCFC has a 2014 goal of $2,310,000. About 90 percent of that amount will be contributed by the Wright-Patterson AFB workforce, said Michael Gill, executive director, Air Force Materiel Command and the 2014 MVCFC grand marshal.

New this year is universal giving, introduced by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Donors can direct their pledges to any CFC-approved charity regardless of duty location or charity location. For instance, a donor can designate his/her pledge to a CFC-approved charity in his/her hometown. The pledge counts where it is made. The entire list of CFC-approved charities can be found online at  www.miamivalleycfc.org  , click Search Charities.

The campaign runs through Nov. 14, with e-pledges accepted until Dec. 15. Payroll deductions will be made from January to December 2015.

Pumpkin Chuck returns to benefit campaign

Derailed last year by furloughs and government shutdowns, the flying gourds of October are set to return.

The 10th Miami Valley Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) Pumpkin Chuck will be Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. near the flight line of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, accessible through the Spinning Road entrance.

The event is being sponsored by Air Force Life Cycle Management Center's EN-EZ.

The application, rules, frequently asked questions, types of chuckers, event description and schedule of events are online at  www.miamivalleycfc.org/_root/   index.php?content_id=5127.

Participants also may enter a pumpkin pie baking contest. New this year is an interoffice pumpkin cream pie speed-eating contest.

Enter with a coworker and try to devour a pie as quickly as you can.
