In 2014, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base's tax center helped the base community prepare 3,163 federal and state returns, saving people more than $410,000 in tax preparation fees.

This program is becoming increasingly popular and additional volunteer tax preparers are needed to meet the heightened demand.

Prior experience in tax preparation is desired but not required. The tax center prepares standard returns. Complicated or more extensive returns are referred to paid preparers.

A free, one-week training course will be provided by IRS instructors on Taxwise in January on base. This is a computerized IRS tax software similar to TurboTax.

Volunteers should be retired officers, NCOs or highly qualified civilians and be able to work at least one-half day per week during the tax-filing season.

Anyone interested in helping should contact Rick Shapiro at 937-429-0812 for additional information.
