Change the climate, change the culture: You make the difference

Climate change has shaped mankind, influencing the location and productivity of man; changing the human culture. Like the weather climate, every Airman, civilian and contractor at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has the power to positively affect the organizational climate.

Through treating each other with dignity, honor and respect, and operating through our core values of integrity, service and excellence, we have the choice each day to continue to make Wright-Patterson the No. 1 base to work at in the Air Force. There are so many ways to contribute.

First, get connected. Know what's going on through unit roll call, Chief Chat, the news, the base Facebook page and through your network. Every good network includes key people. Know the people around you and let people know you. If you don't know what your Wingman's normal behavior looks like, how can you detect abnormal behavior?

Be there for each other. Being there means being actively involved. Attend promotion ceremonies, unit parties and other important social events. Celebrate your work and each other. Be present and in the moment for your wingman; in both good and bad times.

Next, support innovation ... every dollar counts. Be the caretaker of good ideas. Utilize AFSO-21 to improve processes. Challenge the status quo. If there is a better way, find ways to change AFIs and TOs, and cement the new process. Be inspired and inspire others by implementing their great ideas. Measure and celebrate successes and learn from failures.

Lastly, "Get to yes." To me, "no" is the right answer if an idea is illegal, immoral or unsafe. When asked to do something, start with the attitude of we can do it. If a task comes in that can't be done as requested, provide alternates that still achieve the goal. You will be amazed at how much we can do by investing in getting things done as opposed to erecting barriers.

Positively affect the people and climate around you. Choose to smile, say "hello," be pleasant, get connected, be there for your wingman, innovate and say "yes." Each of us has an effect on the climate. In time, our action changes our culture. It starts with you and me. Are you bringing sunshine or rain? It's your choice. See you around the base!
