More than 40 people participated in the fourth Gracie Defense Systems self-defense seminar Jan. 13 at Wright Field Fitness Center, which supported first-time, self-defense students in addressing threatening scenarios.

Participants of all ages took to the mats for this two-hour seminar to learn a few critical techniques and tips. Instructors discussed and demonstrated the four-phase attack strategy used by most aggressors and the importance of knowing techniques for each of them as it pertained to specific scenarios.

"These techniques are like added tools in your tool belt," said Staff Sgt. Joshua Bevins, Gracie Defense System instructor. "This course is designed to empower both men and women and uses techniques that don't involve any kind of striking to disable the adversary."

Gracie Defense Systems, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, relies on 15 techniques that practice street applicability and awareness principles to help reduce your vulnerability to attack. Four of those techniques were demonstrated for this class. All of the techniques are intended to help develop and strengthen confidence, mental strength and coping skills for every student.

The system is built around the mind-set of staying alert and aware of your surroundings, taking reasonable precautions against realistic risks, trusting your instincts, and being willing to act on those instincts when necessary.

"You can help greatly increase your opportunity of escape by changing your perception of your surroundings," said Jesse Brand, Gracie instructor   .

The system encourages all to be strong, smart and safe.

"It was another good experience in self-defense," said Adrienne Schlereth, a class participant.

Several other participants thought it would be interesting to see what this system could teach that would be different than other ones offered.

"Leverage, natural body movements, and timing are what make this defense system different and more effective," said Staff Sgt. Joshua Bevins.

The Gracie Defense System courses are free and are offered at various times and locations on the base.
