The U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine's (USAFSAM) Department of Aeromedical Research is pursuing a mutually beneficial relationship with the 88th Force Support Squadron (88 FSS) to conduct studies aimed at improving human performance and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in Active Duty Airmen. USAFSAM will use space provided by the 88 FSS to establish a Satellite Research Laboratory at the Wright-Field Fitness Center. Here USAFSAM will conduct research in musculoskeletal injury prevention, enhancement of Airmen physical fitness, and tracking and feedback of Airmen fitness progress. This research aims to find new approaches that will prevent injury, validate novel fitness readiness algorithms, and reduce injury rates while optimizing Airmen performance.

The 88 FSS benefits from this partnership because the USAFSAM research will introduce new and alternative approaches to fitness and injury prevention. Similarly, USAFSAM benefits by gaining space, equipment, and a test subject population for their research studies. In the future, 88 FSS and USAFSAM hope this partnership will lead to improved Air Force-wide fitness in Active Duty Airmen as well as improved fitness for retirees and dependents in support of the Air Force Surgeon General's vision of having the healthiest and highest performing segment of the U.S. by 2025.
