Spring cleanup week slated for 18–22 May Published May 8, 2015 By Angela Holland 88th ABW Civil Engineer Group WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio -- Spring cleanup for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has been scheduled for 18-22 May. As in past years, Civil Engineers will have additional dumpsters in place from 18 May through 22 May at the locations listed below. This event is an opportune time for base personnel to do an old-fashioned spring cleaning. All base organizations and housing residents are asked to clean up in and around their facilities. This is a great opportunity for all base housing units to dispose of winter trash build-up and miscellaneous clutter. All base personnel are encouraged to turn-in surplus and/or unused equipment as well as hazardous materials. Facility Managers need to look for items such as: pallets, traffic cones, unused furniture, equipment items and abandoned 55-gallon drums in order to dispose of them properly. The following guidelines are offered for use during base facility cleanup: · Trash: Many types of disposable materials may be put in the dumpsters, with the exception of hazardous materials, furniture, equipment, recyclable materials, salvage materials and serviceable pallets. Trash bags for this effort are available through the 88th Civil Engineer Squadron Customer Service Section located in Facility 30022 (Bldg 22, Area A). For more information, call 257-3131. CE cannot supply trash bags to housing residents. · Extra dumpsters will be located in the following places: Area A at Bldgs. 22, 879 & 4035 and in Area B at Bldgs 490 and 615. For housing residents, dumpsters will be located in the driveway of 412 Metzger Drive (The Brick Quarters). · Pallets: The Recycling Center will pick up 40X45 and 40X48 standard size pallets during the week of 18 -22 May. Please call 257-5060 to schedule a pick up. All size pallets will be accepted if they are brought to the Recycling Center. Stack usable and nonusable pallets separately. If there are only a couple nonusable pallets, discard them in your facility's refuse container. For larger quantities, call the following CE points of contact for removal: Area A - 257-7233 and for Area B - 255-6886. For more information on recycling, contact the Recycling Center at 257-4889. · Equipment turn-in - Metal non-serviceable equipment can be turned in to the Recycling Center. Serviceable equipment must be turned in to Base Supply. Either Base Supply or the Recycling Center can help customers make that determination. For usable property, an AF Form 2005 is used for equipment turn-in items and must be completed and taken to the Equipment Management Section in Bldg 1 (Area A). This must be done in order to assign a document number before the equipment can be delivered to Bldg 257 (Area A). For more information, contact the Equipment Management Section at Base Supply, 257-2084. · Furniture: The base Recycling Center will accept all metal non-serviceable furniture. Serviceable furniture must be turned in to Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Disposition Services. Either the Recycling Center or DLA can help customers make that determination. A Department of Defense Form 1348-1 must be completed for usable items. Upon completion, an appointment must be made before delivering usable furniture to Bldg 741 (Area B). For information or to make an appointment, call the Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services at 255-4635. · Recyclable Materials: The base Recycling Center will accept all scrap metal, cardboard, paper, beverage containers (plastic, glass, and aluminum cans), and lead acid batteries. We will pick up large metal items or a large quantity of metal items or batteries but pick-ups will need to be scheduled. Cardboard, paper, and beverage containers will need to be dropped off at the Recycling Center or one of the eight recycling pods located around the base. Customers can call for directions to the closest pod, or schedule a drop off or pick-up at 257-4889. · White-paper recycling: Containers can be provided for large office cleanouts. Customers can call 257-4889 to arrange for containers. · Hazardous Material and Drum Removal: Before removing drums or any item that could contain hazardous materials, organizations must first contact their Unit Environmental Coordinator (UEC). If your organization does not have a UEC, contact Mr. Gary Selby of CE's Asset Management at 257-3349. All hazardous materials will be characterized for proper disposition and/or disposal. Until told otherwise, personnel should consider any material they are uncertain of as hazardous material. Remember to keep safety in mind when lifting objects. Below are a few safety rules: · Lift with your legs and get help (team lifting) on large and/or heavier items; · Wear leather gloves while handling items with sharp edges to protect against cuts and splinters; · Stay alert for vehicle traffic while policing around roadways and parking lots; · Never substitute a chair for a ladder The Civil Engineer Group, Base Supply, and the Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services are ready to assist your organization in making this annual undertaking a productive event.
