Students from Sinclair Community College's Fire Academy participated in training exercises at the Fire Training Center located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base July 9-16.

The training is part of an agreement between the college and the base, in which firefighting students from Sinclair are able to use base facilities to train and fulfill educational requirements in exchange for the college providing hazardous waste management training and professional workforce development courses to the base's workforce.

The professional development offered through the agreement allows the base's fire instructors to earn credit toward re-certification requirements and it increases the capability of fire fighters to meet the demands of the job.

Additionally, this agreement provides an opportunity for the base workforce to receive professional development training throughout the year by Sinclair instructors.
Chief Jacob King, base fire chief said the exercises provided a chance for Sinclair students to get hands on training.

"Having the students out at our training facility provided a great opportunity," said King. "The students were able to get training fighting live fires that they might not get anywhere else.

Rob Chambers, chairman of the Sinclair's Fire Science Department said that the visit to Wright-Patterson AFB has been a great learning experience for the students.

"This has been a great experience for our students thus far," said Chambers. "Agreements like this, help to provide our students with an opportunity to work with base firefighters as well helps us to provide additional quality firefighters for our communities."

Fire fighters from local fire departments, including from Wright-Patterson AFB assisted the Sinclair students in their training exercises.
