Officers' Spouses' Club awards scholarships for college-bound students

The Wright-Patterson Officers' Spouses' Club presented $20,000 in scholarships during a ceremony at the historic commander's home, the Foulois House, May 22. Scholarships were awarded to one spouse and 10 high school students, all dependents of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base service members, pursuing a degree from a two-year or four-year college, university or vocational school.

First Command Educational Foundation awarded an additional $1,000 scholarship to the highest scoring high school student. WPOSC's primary source of funding is the Wright-Patterson OSC Thrift Shop and proceeds from Mah-jongg book sales.

Winners are:
$3,000 spouse winner: Ashley Vincent, spouse of 1st Lt. Aaron Vincent.
College to attend: Wright State University
Course study: Master of Business Administration
Ashley Vincent is originally from Fort Worth, Texas. She earned her Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University. Recently, she was named Neiman Marcus Group Loss Prevention Associate of the Quarter.

$1,000 High School Winner: Sarah Miller, daughter of retired Lt. Col. Scott and Stephanie Miller.
School: Fairborn High School
College to attend: University of Dayton
Sarah Miller has earned a letter in golf and cross-country while also participating in the symphonic orchestra as a cello first chair. She was named top volunteer with the Fairborn Library and has served on the Ohio Attorney General's Teen Advisory Board. Other achievements include Honda-OSU Math Medal, Fairborn Top Scholar, and Outstanding Senior.

$1,000 High School Winner: Miriam Hastriter, daughter of Col. Michael and Bethany Hastriter.
School: Ohio Connections Academy dual enrolled Clark State Community College
College to attend: Brigham Young University
While working on base at Fruit for All Reasons, Miriam Hastriter has been active in National Honor Society by volunteering with the Beavercreek Library and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She's been named to the dean's list at Clark State Community College where she has dual enrollment and placed first in the Ohio Connections Academy Academic Fair.

$1,500 High School Winner: Alissa Quick, daughter of retired Maj. Steven and Teresa Quick.
School: Quick family homeschool, dual enrolled at Sinclair Community College
College to attend: Lakeland Community College
Alissa Quick has received a partial volleyball scholarship to Lakeland Community College and has participated as a right side hitter in the Elevation's national volleyball team. She also is a PPC FUSE Youth Group member and lead vocalist. She has hundreds of hours of community volunteer service with various organizations.

$1,500 High School Winner: Luke Stone, son of retired Master Sgt. Christopher and Master Sgt. Kelly Graham.*
School: Waynesville High School
College to attend: University of Cincinnati or Miami University
While working four to six days of each week, Luke Stone has served in the student council, sang the national anthem at various military and sporting events, and mentored junior members in both theater and choir. He is also a Thespian Honor Society member.

$1,500 High School Winner: Brian Trevino, son of Senior Master Sgt. Benjamin and Danielle Trevino.
School: Fairborn High School
College to attend: Florida Atlantic University
Brian Trevino has been a camp counselor for the Alabama Wildlife Federation and was a volunteer junior firefighter with the Holtville, Alabama, fire department. He has lettered in cross-country, track and swimming. He also earned honor roll status at each of the four different high schools he attended.

$1,500 High School Winner: Gabi Martinez, daughter of Col. Silas and Erin Martinez.
School: Beavercreek High School
College to attend: Undecided - plans to study Marine Biology
Gabi Martinez is a National Honor Society member. She plays the french horn in the symphonic band as first chair. She has earned the two of the highest awards in Girl Scouts; the Silver and Bronze Awards. She's been a member of the Girl Scouts of the United States for 13 years. She also enjoys many sports and has earned multiple awards for participating in fine arts shows and contests.

$2,000 High School Winner: Morgan Buckley, daughter of Col. Kevin and Nancy Buckley. *
School: Archbishop Alter High School
College to attend: Butler University
While working since 2013, Morgan Buckley also volunteers regularly at Southview Hospital -Infusion Center and Emergency Room. She has completed two mission trips to Guatemala and Ecuador. She has also been named an Alter Scholar and National Honor Society member.

$2,000 High School Winner: Julia Poth, daughter of retired Col. Michael and Karen Poth.
School: Bellbrook High School
College to attend: Miami University
Julia Poth's accomplishments include being a National Honor Society member, volunteering on multiple mission trips, letter of commendation from National Merit Scholarship Program and earning several athletic awards for high achievement in academics and athletics.

$2,000 High School Winner: Corey Pilson, son of L. Coy and Col. Donna Pilson.*
School: Rutherford High School
College to attend: applied to Harvard, Duke and University of Virginia
Corey Pilson's accomplishments include earning a 4.6 GPA in International Baccalaureate Program, serving as student government president and participating as a varsity athlete.

$3,000 High School Winner and $1,000 First Command Winner: Erin Kafka, daughter of Lt. Col. Robert and Susan Kafka
School: Centerville High School
College to attend: Ohio State University
Erin Kafka's accomplishments include finishing in the top 10 percent out of a class of 700 students, being inducted into the National Honor Society, and receiving an All State title at the state gymnastics meet for Vault

The WPOSC Mah-jongg book order form is available at www.wrightpattersonosc.org. The WPOSC Thrift Store, located at Bldg 95 - Area A, is open 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
The 2016-2017 WPOSC scholarship application will be available on the WPOSC website in the fall of 2016.
