Hazardous Material Section keeps Wright-Patt personnel safe Published June 16, 2016 By W. Eugene Barnett Jr 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- The Base Supply Hazardous Materials warehouse maintains storage of all hazardous materials utilized by the base populace at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, according to Ed Honore, Supply Manager, 88th Logistics Readiness Squadron, Hazard Material Section. Data Monitor Systems, the 88 LRS Service Provider, consistently provide professional, reliable oversight and management of all hazardous material housed within the 88 LRS facilities. "Our participation and support of the Volunteer Protection Program (VPP) is critical to the management of hazardous materials. We promote a culture of safety when handling hazardous materials from "Cradle to grave." The efforts of the 88 LRS and the 88 LRS Service Provider along with Hazardous Materials management team have proven to be an effective Safety and Health program, Honore said. "Hazardous Materials control is job one for our team. We consistently practice different ways to conserve resources, prevent spillage and prevent unauthorized use or misuse of hazardous materials through coordination with the 88 Hazmat Program Manager, shelf life monitoring and inspection programs," Honore said. Base Supply does not produce or manage Hazardous Waste. However, they provide a bay location within their building for hazardous waste holding purposes. The facility, built in 1994, is a state of the art supply warehouse to store hazardous material and does not allow any hazardous materials to co-mingle with each other. There are separate storage vaults depending upon the type of materials. These storage areas have safety features such as overflow reservoirs built into the floors of the storage areas. There are manual ways to open doors during power outages and fire suppression systems. HAZMAT personnel work very closely with the Wright-Patt Fire Department. Whenever there is a fire or accident, the Base Supply Hazardous Materials warehouse provides a manual with detailed information of all of the chemicals/hazards that are contained in each building on base. These two manuals identify the chemicals so the fire department will know how to treat the fire. The flight line, civil engineering, and maintenance are examples of customers who would order something hazardous thru HAZMAT. HAZMAT checks the approved list provided by Bio-Environmental and allows the product to be used on base. Data Sheets (SDS) are used by HAZMAT for every hazardous product that is used on base. These labels track the product with information from the warehouse to the customer and allow the customer the knowledge on how to properly dispose of it.
