Oct. 5–11 marks Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s theme — “Charge Into Fire Safety” — focuses on the safe use of battery-powered devices and the growing need to understand fire risks in our technology-filled lives.

As more homes and workplaces depend on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in phones, scooters, laptops, power tools and e-bikes, the risks of fire from improper charging, overheating or faulty devices are also increasing. This week serves as a vital reminder that fire prevention starts with awareness, responsibility and action.

Why “Charge Into Fire Safety?"

This year’s theme highlights:

  • Safe charging practices for electronics and rechargeable devices.
  • Recognizing early warning signs of battery failure, such as swelling, overheating or strange smells.
  • Proper storage and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.
  • The importance of working smoke alarms and home escape plans — because even the best devices can fail.

⚠️Tips to Stay Safe With Rechargeable Devices

  1. Only use chargers that are certified and intended for the device. Knock-off chargers can overheat or damage batteries.
  2. Don’t charge devices under pillows, on beds or near flammable materials.
  3. Unplug devices once they’re fully charged.
  4. Avoid using damaged batteries or devices. Replace them immediately.
  5. Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat.
  6. Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Check with your local recycling program for proper disposal.

🔥 Fire Safety Basics Still Matter

While battery safety is a growing focus, traditional fire prevention is just as important:

  • Test smoke alarms monthly.
  • Practice home escape plans with your family.
  • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable.
  • Never leave cooking unattended.

👨‍🚒 Learn It, Live It, Share It

Fire Prevention Week is also about education and community engagement. Fire departments across the country will host open houses, school visits and demonstrations. Take the opportunity to ask questions, check out fire safety gear and teach younger children how to respond in an emergency.
