Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will conduct an active-shooter exercise on August 20 to test and evaluate emergency response procedures while assessing base safety and security measures.

The exercise will begin in the morning. The base will go into full lock-down as part of the exercise scenario. Personnel on the installation are asked to take immediate action and act as if the scenario were real.

WPAFB officials remind base and community members to not call 911 or other emergency numbers as this is an exercise. Emergency response agencies and dispatch centers from nearby communities were notified of the event by exercise planners.

Residents of surrounding communities and personnel on the base should anticipate the following temporary changes and impacts during the exercise period:

  • Increased traffic and delays at base entry gates due to heightened security screenings
  • Temporary road closures around the installation to simulate emergency conditions
  • Enhanced security measures throughout the base
  • Activation of the base’s “Giant Voice” public address system and other alert sirens
  • Use of electronic notification systems to disseminate exercise-related information
