AFRL delivered and transitioned the final software release of its mosaicking software to the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. AFRL also plans to transition the software to the Global Command and Control System (GCCS) 4.X family of systems as part of the GCCS Integrated Imagery and Intelligence tool upgrade. The mosaicking software produces National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF) 2.1-compliant mosaics from predator and other motion imagery standard profile compliant video sources. In addition to its high-quality frame alignment capability and computational efficiency, the mosaicking software contains enhanced features for calculating resultant corner coordinates, handling abrupt scene changes, and addressing burned-in annotations.

AFRL developed the mosaicking algorithm as part of an in-house research project. Researchers used contractor support to package the mosaicking algorithm with standard Department of Defense data formatting utilities for Moving Picture Experts Group-2 video and NITF imagery. The mosaicking software will allow the GCCS to automatically create full-size mosaics, as well as mosaic thumbnails of all clips within its video database. The ability to quickly view thumbnails instead of downloading and playing video clips will speed operator searches. Operators will also have a new capability to create custom mosaics for generating overview images.
