AFRL Successfully Demonstrates New Processor Designed for Power Efficiency, Programmability, and Space Use Published Dec. 4, 2006 By Information Directorate AFRL/IF ROME, N.Y. -- AFRL and ITT Industries successfully communicated with a laboratory-designed, fully programmable processor optimized for power efficiency, programming ease, and space use. AFRL engineers will next perform radiation testing on the processor, which consumes just one-tenth the power per operation of comparable processors. Engineers will test the processor on experimental satellites; however, it is equally applicable to unmanned air vehicles, unattended sensors, and other applications involving size and weight restrictions and unique power requirements. The new processor's hardware and software design is available to all Department of Defense programs and their contractors to facilitate reuse across government programs.
