Clear skies, bright sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s provided the perfect backdrop April 2 for 85 Wright-Patterson Air Force Base members who helped commemorate and participate in opening day festivities at the Cincinnati Reds baseball game at the Great American Ball Park.

During the historic and celebrated traditions of baseball's oldest team, those associated with Wright-Patterson had the distinct honor of holding the American flag during the singing of the national anthem, performed by recording artist Gia Farrell, that was followed by fireworks and applause.

A quartet of F-16 jets from the 178th Fighter Wing of the Ohio National Guard based in Springfield flew over during the pre-game show as well at the conclusion of the anthem.

Tech. Sgt. Sonya Harper said it was a great honor to present and represent the Air Force. She said it's a memory she won't be forgetting anytime soon.

"That was one of the most overwhelming and awesome things like that I have ever done," Sgt. Harper said. "When the (public address announcer) introduced us and talked about the 60th anniversary of the Air Force, the crowd gave us a wonderful standing ovation."

Sgt. Harper said Wright-Patterson members took two buses down to the game, and free tickets were provided with great seats that offered an excellent view of the field.

"Some members even had a chance to get autographs from some of the Reds players before the game started," she said. "From beginning to end, a great time was had by all."

Those lucky enough to be in attendance witnessed two mammoth home runs by Cincinnati star Adam Dunn and even more fireworks after the 5-1 victory.
