In accordance with 36 Code of Federal Regulations Part 800, Protection of Historic Properties, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is seeking public comment from August 1, 2008 through August 15, 2008, on the proposed demolitions of Buildings 40 and 55 located in Area B of the base.

Both buildings are contributing elements of the Wright Field Historic District, which is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The total demolition of Buildings 40 and 55 is proposed, with restoration of the sites back to grade and replanted with grass.

Building 40 was constructed in 1944 as the Wright Field Dispensary. It remained in use as a medical facility until the spring of 2002, when the mission moved into another facility. Since then, it has been vacant. Building 55 was constructed in 1942 to house the Second Human Centrifuge, which tested human endurance to the effects of acceleration. The centrifuge was operational from May 1943 until the summer of 1948. In 1948, the Aero Medical Laboratory dismantled the centrifuge and refurbished the facility to house its Clothing Branch. In 2001, the Clothing Branch relocated to another facility, and the building remains vacant.

The public is invited to review further information regarding this action and its effects on historic properties at the Greene County Library, Fairborn Branch, One East Main St., in Fairborn, Ohio.
