Construction zones “OFF LIMITS” to pedestrians Published Aug. 21, 2008 WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- BRAC-related construction progress here is a source of both curiosity and minor inconvience due to traffic detours. For everyone's safety, all pedestrian traffic, including joggers, should avoid entering or passing through construction zones. For the safety of both the base populous and construction workers, construction sites are limited to "authorized personnel only," said Barbara O'Brien, engineering division deputy with the 88th Air Base Wing Civil Engineer Directorate. Signs, caution tape, cones, mounds of dirt, heavy equipment, etc. are good indicators of these high accident potential areas, base civil engineers said. Construction zones can be hazardous environments, even when wearing the proper safety equipment including boots, hard hat, safety vest, and as such are limited to authorized personnel only. In particular, construction areas on the top of the hill in Area B (around Hobson Way (10th - 5th), Q Street (south of 5th) and the new road for Gate 19B) are "off limits" to pedestrians and joggers. "Approved running tracks, road and walkways free of construction activity are plentiful on base, so we ask all walkers and runners that frequent this area to revise their workout routes for safety's sake," O'Brien said. It is not always feasible to completely secure a construction site, however, road detours and signage are excellent indicators to the general base populous to avoid and stay clear of these areas, she added.
