Wounded Eagle exercise may affect entire base

Wing exercise planners here will kick off Wounded Eagle 08-03, a base-wide emergency response exercise, Oct. 8 - 9.

The latest exercise was rescheduled from the originally planned dates of Sept. 15-17 after a major wind storm knocked down trees, took out electrical power and damaged a number of base buildings. Col. Bradley Spacy, 88th Air Base Wing commander, then elected to focus the base on storm recovery actions, to include cleanup of the U.S. Air Force Marathon route and other actions to ready the Wright-Patterson to host nearly 7,400 runners.

Most exercise activity will not impact communities surrounding Wright-Patt. However people from across the base may hear sirens, observe emergency vehicles, temporary traffic restrictions, gate delays, facility closures, and other customer service impacts, said Maj. Jason Jackson, 88th Air Base Wing chief of installation readiness & exercises.

A large number of base participants will face various contingencies and wartime scenarios to test their response. Wounded Eagle is part of the family of exercise events to ready for the upcoming Operational Readiness Inspection, Jackson said. Exercise Evaluation Team members will observe how base members handle emergencies such as terrorist activity, force protection changes, and disease containment.

Base officials ask visitors to plan for the increased security measures and appreciate everyone's continued cooperation and understanding.
