An extremely difficult and competitive economic environment notwithstanding, base officials here are currently looking to hire some 300 students to fill summer employment positions.

"Don't miss out!" That is the message Brenda Myers clearly wants to send to the crop of potential applicants, most of whom typically come from the greater Dayton region.

Ms. Myers, Recruiting and Student Employment Program manager with Wright-Patt's Civilian Personnel Office, said the plan is to hire approximately 300 students to fill jobs in organizations across the installation ranging from life guards to administrative, finance, contracting, human resources, science and engineering support positions.

"We're very excited this year about our robust summer employment program for students who are looking for challenging and rewarding experiences with the U.S. Air Force," Myers said. "Students can gain marketable skills and earn a great salary while enjoying their summer vacation!"

Students in appropriated funded positions will typically earn from $9.74 to $18.59 per hour, depending on their educational background and grade level, and prior work experience. The range for non-appropriated funded positions in Wright-Patt's Services Division -- which includes the recreation, child care and food service facilities -- is around $7.70 to $8.50 per hour.

In order to be eligible for the summer/student programs, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen, at least 16 years of age, and currently enrolled in high school, college, or a trade/technical school.

Students interested should start now by completing a resume and applying via the following websites:

For appropriated funded positions, individuals can log onto the Wright Patterson Employment Web site at https://wrightpattjobs.wpafb.af.mil  and click on the Student Employment Program or contact Ms. Myers at (937) 257-8305. Information on non-appropriated funded positions is available at http://www.88thservices.com/humanresources.htm. Those seeking information about student jobs in government nationwide can also search www.studentjobs.gov/.

Resumes will remain active for one year or until a placement is made, Ms. Myers said. The Department of the Air Force will not pay or assume liability for personal travel, moving expenses or other relocation costs incurred in accepting summer employment.

Applicants for summer employment will be considered for temporary positions only. Summer employment positions are typically 60-90 days in duration beginning in the May-June timeframe.

"In addition to assisting young people in the local community to gain valuable work experience, we believe that these efforts to develop future leaders will pay big dividends toward our future and to that of the Air Force," said Jerry Stryker, a supervisory program analyst with Wright-Patterson's Civilian Personnel Office.
