Base and local emergency response officials plan to jointly exercise response actions following two simulated aircraft crashes here July 8-10. Other exercise activity will also be going on throughout the three days.

Several scenarios will test fire fighting, security, command and control and other coordination between local community and on-base agencies, said Carmen Riches, chief of exercise planning for the 88th Air Base Wing.

Exercise activity will take place at several locations both on the installation and off-base at the Oaks Quarry in Fairborn.

Realistic exercise activity may result in impacts visible to the general public including emergency response vehicles with flashing lights, temporary traffic movement restrictions, long lines at base gates, along with brief facility closures and detours associated with security cordons around and downwind of the simulated crash site.

"If a real-world crash were to occur, we would rely heavily on our community partners in law enforcement, fire, rescue, as well as trauma hospitals. Joint exercises like this are vital to ensuring the response is both effective and efficient. So we periodically test our mutual support agreements and National Incident Management System coordination procedures to help save lives and property," Riches said.

Base officials ask visitors to plan accordingly and appreciate everyone's continued cooperation and understanding.
