Gates 12A (AFMC HQ) in Area A and 1B (Springfield Rd.) in Area B are set to close as new overhead canopies and guard booths are installed beginning on Mar. 8.

The gate projects, designed to protect security personnel and motorist from the elements and enhance force protection entry control procedures, are expected to last approximately 60 days.

The initial portion of the project will focus on Gates 12A and 1B with 22B in Area B also slated to receive a canopy and guard booths later in the summer.

To help ease potential traffic congestion, additional gates will be opened and some gates will extend their hours of operation.

Detailed maps and instructions for alternate gates during the construction will be published beginning next week on the Wright-Patterson AFB public website at www.wpafb.af.mil, the WPAFB Facebook page and next week's Skywriter.

"We are always looking for ways to improve gate access; these overhead canopies do just that. Motorists will be protected from various weather elements when gaining entry to the base, and improved lighting and shelter will expedite traffic flow and enhance our guard's ability to carry out their important roles," said Col Tim Donohue, 88th Mission Support Group commander.

Base employees should anticipate some minor delays during peak travel hours and are asked to adjust your travel plans accordingly in the morning, at lunch and in the afternoon. We will monitor the traffic flow during the construction period closely and adjust gate hours or openings as the situation dictates.

"We ask for everyone's patience in advance during the construction. While this is a temporary inconvenience now, the long term benefits of these gate enhancements will be well worth it down the road," said Col Donohue.
