Base design teams win Air Force awards

Wright Patterson Air Force Base came up a big winner of the recently announced Air Force 2010 Design Awards. The design teams from the base earned one Honor Award, two Merit Awards and three Citation Awards.

"Winning an Air Force Design Award is always a time of great satisfaction for a job well done," said Jim Balsamo, Chief of Design at Wright Field. "To win six awards in one year is an incredible achievement."

The Honor Award was for Concept Design of the 711th Human Systems Wing Facility. The two Merit Awards were for Concept Designs of the Information Technology Complex and renovation of buildings 12 and 17. The Three Citation Awards were for Concept Design of the Security Forces Operations Center, Interior Design of Sarris Auditorium and Facility Design of the Air Force Institute of Technology Academic Building.

There were a total of 23 Air Force Design Awards given out this year. Wright-Patt won more the 25 percent of the awards and six of the eight awards submitted to the Air Force from Air Force Materiel Command.

Winning awards in not new to the design shop. Wright-Patt has won 11 Air Force Design Awards in the last decade. The most awards won, before this year, was four in 1992.

"This year's achievement of winning six Air Force Design Awards is truly a testimony to the Civil Engineer Directorate's hard work and dedication to the principles of design excellence in partnership with the Louisville Corps of Engineers, regional architect-engineer firms and our local contractor community," said Balsamo.

In an official message from Headquarters U.S. Air Force in Washington D.C. announcing the winners, Lt. Gen. Loren Reno, Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Installations and Mission Support, stated "each winner clearly demonstrates the highest level of design excellence and I offer my most sincere congratulations on winning theses prestigious awards."

A ceremony honoring the recipients of these awards will be held in Washington D.C. on July 29, 2010.
