New Harmony lights up Urban Nights Published May 18, 2010 By Ted Theopolos 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- One of the newest ensembles of the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight is New Harmony, who performed on the main stage at Courthouse Square in downtown Dayton, Ohio, during Urban Nights on May 14. The eight-piece band started the event playing "Living in America," by James Brown. Vocalist Senior Airman Andrew Jones thanked the crowd for coming out to Urban Nights before moving to their next song, "Waiting on the World to Change," by John Mayer. The music echoed through downtown, bouncing off of large buildings, resulting in more people showing up and listening to New Harmony. The visitors grabbed a beverage and something to eat and sat at the tables provided for the event. The sun going down and a cool breeze made it great for an outdoor venue. The band -- with its high level of energy and enthusiasm -- inspired the audience to get on their feet. Old and young alike took to the dance area in front of the stage when the band started playing "Brick House," by The Commodores. The five-brass section, along with a lead guitar, drummer and vocalist, also played popular music from South America. Airman Jones sang the songs in Spanish. The band is deploying soon to South America for a four month deployment. The Band of Flight and its ensembles travel nearly 60,000 miles each year from their home at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, to present almost 350 performances before both military and civilian audiences. New Harmony played for 45 minutes and left the stage to a round of applause. Before departing the stage, Master Sgt. Chris Jeffery thanked the audience of over 200 for their support. The next two concerts for New Harmony will be May 22, at Library Park in Miamisburg, Ohio, and at the Veterans Park Amphitheater on June 22, in Springfield, Ohio.
