The Annual Secretary of Defense Environmental Award commends those who employ conservation and sustainability policies on their installations that support the nation's environmental and security strategies. The Air Force captured 4 out of the 9 environmental awards given. "I am extremely proud of my team," said Tedmond Grady, team leader of the 21 member team that was recognized for their Weapons Acquisition Program. In this program, team members worked to develop weapon system alternatives that reduced environmental risk while improving weapon performance. In addition to developing weapon system alternatives, ASC/ENVV also worked year round to educate over 1000 personnel and enforce compliance with Environmental Safety and Occupational Health regulations and procedures. "Each member is vital to the effectiveness in providing understanding of ESOH regulations, which helps to decrease hazardous risks," Mr. Grady said. The team developed a DoD-wide web-based course with Air Force Institute of Technology addressing ESOH and risk management. ASC/ENVV also worked with Air Force Research Laboratory to provide the first Air Force workshop on biological interaction of engineered nanomaterials. The team was also recognized for providing environmentally friendly alternatives in a cost effective way. Among the cost saving efforts, the team reformulated deicing fluid for aircraft brake-pads, producing $800,000 in savings per aircraft, calculated at over $8 million total. "The team works really hard to produce quality results, and it ultimately provides saving opportunities for the Air Force," Mr. Grady said.
