Air Force Marathon seeks volunteers Published June 14, 2011 WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio -- The Air Force Marathon office is looking for a few good men and women to help out at this year's marathon and expo event September 14 to 17, 2011. According to Jeanette Monaghan, Volunteer Coordinator, it takes nearly 2,000 volunteers to put together a successful event. "We absolutely could not do this without the support of the community," Ms. Monaghan said. "Volunteers assist with everything, from set-up to tear down and everything in between. We even have musicians who volunteer and play music along the route. Volunteers are the lifeblood of this event." While many of the volunteers come back year after year, she said there is always room for new volunteers. "Of course we appreciate the volunteers who make this an annual event," Ms. Monaghan stated, "but it's always exciting to welcome new volunteers into the Marathon family as well." There are six major categories where volunteers are needed this year: Set-up for the Expo at the Nutter Center beginning Wednesday, September 14, with shifts available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; registration help at the Expo on September 15 and 16 with shifts from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; 5K race volunteers on Friday, September 16 from 5 to 8 p.m.; marathon race day volunteers on Saturday, September 17, with shifts running from 4:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; musicians/bands for race day, September 17, who are willing to play from 7:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.; and ham radio operators for race day. Most shifts are three to four hours long, and the marathon staff will work with volunteers to accommodate their interests and availability. Complete details of each job description and the shifts available are listed on the website at www.usafmarathon.com. Interested volunteers can register online, or call Jeanette Monaghan at (937) 257-8334 with any questions.
