Starting Monday, Aug. 15, Wright-Patterson area military dependents and retirees will be able to register in DBIDs, the Defense Biometric Identification System.

Retirees and family members with valid military identification cards will then be able to register at Pass and Registration, Bldg 286, Area A, Mondays through Fridays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

To register, individuals must bring their DoD identification card. Those with multiple IDs should bring each to register them. Additionally valid state vehicle registration and insurance card, or other proof of financial liability are required. The actual registration process typically takes about 10 minutes.

DBIDS registration enables gate sentries to use scanning technology to rapidly determine whether personnel are authorized base access, said Tech. Sgt. Jason Grant, DBIDS implementation lead with the 88th Security Forces Squadron.

The new system will notify gate sentries about lost or stolen ID cards, individuals barred from base, or persons who are being sought by their commander for an emergency or key response notification. The moment ID cards are reported stolen, or people expected to enter gates who require notification or detention, the information can be flagged in the system, instantly alerting guards.

"This is a DoD initiative and Wright-Patterson is coming on board," Sergeant Grant said. "DBIDS is designed to be a fast, easy, and convenient way to securely enter military installations. But the first step is to register."

Sergeant Grant noted while he encourages retirees and dependents to register in DBIDs when it is convenient.  There is no need to hurry and register.

"You don't need to rush. Aug. 15 is just the beginning of a registration process that will take many months to complete," Sergeant Grant said. "However for convenience, I would encourage retirees and dependents to try and register when they have other reasons to drive to the base."

As many as 90,000 base-affiliated people are expected to eventually register into the DBIDS database for Wright-Patterson AFB.

The DBIDS registration taking place at Pass and Registration is only for retirees and dependents. Registration for active duty, Guard and Reserve military members, DoD civilian employees and contractors who have Common Access Cards is scheduled separately by unit DBIDs points of contact and will take place via mobile registration stations at designated locations and times. Sergeant Grant said base employees will be informed through their unit rep about time and place.

The Security Forces Squadron also plans to perform future mobile DBIDS registration at common areas which receive lots of traffic, such as Wright-Patterson Medical Center and the Commissary. One mobile registration already scheduled will take place Oct. 28, 2011 at the Hope Hotel during Retiree Appreciation Day. Locations and dates for mobile registrations will be posted on the Wright-Patterson public webpage and in the base Skywrighter newspaper.
