Wright-Patt volunteers a hit with local civic organization Published Jan. 23, 2012 By Ted Theopolos 88 Air Base Wing/Public Affairs DAYTON, Ohio -- Wright-Patterson Air Force Base received the President's Volunteer Service Award at the Habitat for Humanity volunteer celebration Jan. 19. The base was one of three organizations to take top group honors at the annual award event, held at the America's Packard Museum in downtown Dayton. Maj. Lee Masztak, deputy chief of the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program Branch, earned an individual bronze-level President's Volunteer Service Award for volunteering 223.8 hours for 2011 at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The ReStore resale donates goods that are sold to the general public, and proceeds help fund local construction of Habitat homes. The major started in December 2010 and has volunteered most Saturdays, working from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. "Working with Habitat for Humanity in the ReStore is rewarding in two ways," said Major Masztak. "First, I love to organize, and the ReStore constantly receives donations that need to be sorted, priced and stocked. Second, I work with a great group of other volunteers, so it is an enjoyable time and ultimately helps to build Habitat houses." The President's Volunteer Service Awards were awarded to the University of Dayton, GE Capital and Wright-Patterson AFB. Receiving the award for the base was Col. Amanda Gladney, 88th Air Base Wing commander. Base volunteers rack up the highest voluntary hours with 1,917 from 360 base volunteers. That's up from 977 voluntary hours for 2010. "From individual volunteers to teams, from build sites to behind the scenes, we appreciate all the enlisted and civilian Wright-Patt employees who go above and beyond their daily tasks to give back to our community," said Lizz Kelly, Habitat for Humanity volunteer services coordinator. "Nearly all of the 11 Dayton Habitat homes built or rehabbed in 2011 included at least one member of Wright-Patt contributing to making the dream of an energy-efficient affordable home come true for Habitat families," Ms. Kelly said. Twenty-three organizations on Wright-Patt have contributed to this year's award. According to the Habitat for Humanity, the volunteers are from: · ASC PKO · 88 FSS/FSMPS · CGOC · HQ AFMC Junior Force Council · B-2 Builders · 88 MDSS/SGSX · AFOSI 10 FIS · CARE · Consultant Division · HQ AFMC A6/7 · AFIT/SC · NASIC · 771 ESS · 88 SFS · 4A/MSC · FUEL · NASIC/ACL · HQ AFMC Top 3 · Wedgewood Group · 88 Medical Group Top 3 · HQ AFMC/A7S · USAF Pediatric Clinic · USAF Bioengineers Since 1983 when the Dayton chapter of Habitat for Humanity, first affiliate in Ohio, was formed, the organization has helped build or rehab 178 houses in six different cities in the local area.
