Young Guns take the win in annual competition Published July 15, 2024 By R.J. Oriez 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- The 18th Annual Young Guns vs. Old Pistols Challenge wrapped up for 2024 with the Young Guns taking the title. Organized by the Wright-Patterson Junior Force Council, the challenge’s primary goal is not competition but for building camaraderie. “So, the Young Guns vs. Old Pistols event series has two primary functions. First, it is a wellness challenge,” said Thomas Stang, Young Guns vs. Old Pistols cochairman. “It is an opportunity to help the participants focus on their physical, mental and emotional well-being. And, then, it is also a series of networking opportunities so that junior force can find members of the senior community to provide mentorship. Then, overall, we can just build camaraderie amongst the entire Air Force community here at Wright-Patt.” Garrett Basham, National Air and Space Intelligence Center employee, leaps for a flying disc during the 18th Annual Young Guns vs Old Pistols Challenge Ultimate Frisbee match April 4, 2024, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The Young Guns went on to win the overall title at the end of the six events that included volleyball, kickball, a trivia competition and board games. (U.S. Air Force photo by R.J. The Young Guns are lieutenants, captains, technical sergeants and below, as well as GS-12 civilians and below. Majors, master sergeants, GS-14 and above are Old Pistols. GS-13s can join either team depending on their tenure at Wright-Patt. Stang explained that everybody earns points for their teams just by showing up. Additional points can be earned through the wellness challenge. “ There is a form that people fill out, that is tracking their wellness,” Slang said. “You could get points just by getting eight hours of sleep. Did you eat a balanced diet that day? So, every single person could score points and they would get totaled up throughout the competition.” This year’s challenge included six events, not all of which were athletic. “We tried to keep it pretty equally split so that people who are more intrigued by networking or by nonathletic events, have their things that they get to enjoy,” Stang said. “And then, the people who want to run around and chase things has theirs.” Lt. The challenge kicked off with a networking event at a local restaurant to promote camaraderie. Typically, teams would earn points based on their performance in each event. However, due to a shortage of Old Pistols this year, teams were mixed during the sporting events, which increased the opportunities for the Young Guns to interact with people of different ranks and organizations—thus making more connections. Norman Nelson, a contractor with the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, participated for his sixth year as an Old Pistol. “It went well,” Nelson said. “We just didn’t have enough Old Pistols to participate compared to the Young Guns.” Nelson added that the camaraderie and the chance to meet new friends made it worthwhile. “It’s an opportunity to make friends, meet people, learn about their organization, teach other folks about your organization and how we all work together to achieve a common goal,” Nelson said. I go camping, hiking, biking, so I wanted to come, know people, use this event as a networking event and also meeting new people as well as enjoying the activities.” When asked if he would join again next year, Khan’s answer came quickly. “Sure! If I’m still breathing! Definitely,” he said. Shevon Barnes, Wright-Patt Junior Force Council vice president and Young Guns vs. Old Pistols co-chair, is already looking ahead to next year. She said there are several places where people interested in participating can find information about signing up next spring. “Join the Wright-Patterson Junior Force Council Teams page,” Barnes said, adding that a person does not need to be a member of the council to join the page. She also mentioned it will be advertised online in the Wright-Patt Weekly Bulletin, in a base-wide email, and on flyers starting around March 2025.
