WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio --

Name and rank: Airman 1st Class Oscar Flores

Duty title: Server administrator

Unit of assignment: 88th Communications Squadron

What do you do at Wright-Patt? I am responsible for maintaining servers for different organizations on base, as well as assisting in projects that include building servers, updating databases and making sure our servers are compliant with current security measures.

It is our job to ensure the stable operations of our networks. Daily tasks may include: checking BMC Remedy, a ticket system for problem-solving; building virtual servers for certain clients, scanning and maintaining other computers to ensure vulnerabilities are kept low.

Why are you and your job important to the Air Force and WPAFB?

Security is a big aspect of my job — making sure our servers are secure to prevent hackers from obtaining sensitive data or attempting to compromise the mission of any organization across Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Without network administrators, the network would be subject to vulnerabilities and there would be no one to keep them intact. Wright-Patterson has 30,000 employees across many different organizations, and they all have servers that need to be maintained and secured.
