WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio- The 88th Civil Engineering Group works to keep Wright-Patt a clean and safe environment for its military and civilian employees to work and live through an Environmental Protection Agency regulated program.

“Organizations such as the CEG and programs like its Hazardous Waste Program help to ensure that all Initial Accumulation Points are in compliance with all EPA regulations regarding Hazardous Waste regulations related to storage, labeling, containment, record keeping, etc,” said  Jason Baldwin, Hazardous Waste field compliance officer.

Some examples of hazardous waste that CEG handles are paint, adhesives, solvents and jet fuel.

“There is also a subset called universal waste, which are items found in every building such as lamps and batteries,” said Baldwin.

According to Baldwin, the Hazardous Waste Program and the training that CEG provides to workers is vital and ensures that Wright-Patt is following EPA guidelines.

CEG is inspected by the EPA three times a year. Baldwin said that the inspections also help ensure there is a safe work environment for the Airmen, civilians, and contractors on base by reducing the chance of spills or other environmental contamination.

Baldwin stated that CEG also provides training to Initial Accumulation Points managers, supervisors, and Unit Environmental Coordinators.

“We are here to answer any questions people may have regarding hazardous waste so that everyone can understand what is required regarding hazardous waste regulations,” said Baldwin.

Baldwin went on to explain that anyone with household hazardous waste, should not drop it off at the recycling center. They should contact their county hazardous waste site instead and schedule a drop-off.
