Dayton area offers variety of March Saturday activities

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – As the recent cold weather finally thaws into the warmth of springtime, March Saturdays in the greater-Dayton area provide an abundance of activities, both indoor and outdoor, to shake off the winter blues.

March 2

Join Mr. Frank and Fultzie, “Cookin' Up Chemistry” for Science Saturday at the Dayton’s Engineer's Club, 110 East Monument Ave. This free event is designed to “inspire curiosity as children and families explore amazing science concepts.” Open seating begins at 9 a.m., and the show starts at 9:30.

Art with Buddies, a class for kids on the Autism Spectrum is termed “a special class for kids with ASD.” Each student, with the aid of their own “buddy” caretaker, will get individualized attention from an experienced art teacher. The class meets at the Rosewood Arts Centre, 2655 Olson Drive, Dayton, from 11 to 11:45 a.m. There is a cost of $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents. Set sail with the Pirates of Penzance, a Gilbert and Sullivan comic operetta in two acts, on stage at Dayton’s Schuster Center, 1 West 2nd Street. The curtain goes up at 8 p.m. and complete information on the show can be found at www.daytonperformingarts.org

March 9

Spring is in the air at the 2019 Dayton Home and Outdoor Living Show, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 East Fifth Street.  Home improvement, outdoor living, kitchen and bath design, culinary demonstrations and a “chef showdown” are among the scheduled features. It’s all about the music at the Dayton Record Fair, where the whole spectrum of music genres from jazz to classical to country to soul, and everything in between, recorded on a wide range of media are available. The show begins at 11 a.m., at Dayton Liederkranz-Turner, 1400 E. Fifth Street, Dayton, and runs until 4 p.m. There is a $5 admission charge.

There’s an opportunity for service in the great outdoors at the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, 405 Corry St., Yellow Springs. Volunteers can assist the Glen Helen Ranger with trail maintenance, graffiti removal, litter clean-up and other trail tasks on the 1,000 acre preserve from 1 to 3 p.m.

March 16

Learn about various aspects of weather, especially how it affects flight, at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force’s Meteorology Mania Family Day Demonstrations and hands-on activities. Admission is free.

Youth, ages 8 to 12, can experience a typical work day for a farm hand and help with feeding animals, gathering eggs, and a variety of other historic chores during the Family Farm Chores at Carriage Hill MetroPark event from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Meet at the front gate of the farm at the park which is located at 7800 East Shull Road, Huber Heights. For just $10, your taste buds get to take a front seat at the 2019 Taste of Ohio Festival, known as a “Gourmet Taste Off,” from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 645 Infirmary Road, Dayton. Appetizers, entrees, desserts, pastries and beverages from some of the area's finest restaurants, caterers, bakeries, delicatessens and beverage companies are featured at the culinary event. March 23

The 12th Annual No Buts about it 5K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness offers participants the opportunity to help raise money “for the free screening colonoscopies and increasing awareness about the importance of screening colonoscopies to the Greater Dayton community.” Online registration is at www.nobutsaboutit.org with a $25, March 19, pre-registration deadline.

Bugs and insects rule in the diary of unlikely best friends Worm, Spider and Fly during performances at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., at the Victoria Theatre, 138 North Main St., Dayton. The Dayton Heart Ball, 6 p.m., at Sinclair Community College, 444 W 3rd St, Dayton is a “must attend” social event presented by the American Heart Association, Dayton. It spotlights the community working together in the Dayton area to fight against heart disease and stroke. Tickets are $150 person and there is a cocktail reception, the “Open Your Heart Appeal” dinner, a live auction, dessert and dancing planned for the event. Call (937) 401-4866 for more information.

March 30

The Price it! Road Show at the Woodbourne Library, 6060 Far Hills Ave., Centerville, gives attendees the chance to find out how much that unique “treasure” found at the flea market is worth! Collectibles such as books, art, jewelry, pottery, sterling silver and more, with a limit of two items per person can be appraised. Firearms will not be considered. Line numbers will be handed out beginning at 10 a.m., when the Library opens and the free event goes until noon.

The Southern Ohio Indoor Music Festival at the Roberts Convention Centre in Wilmington, 123 Gano Road., Wilmington, Ohio, termed as “one of the Midwest's premiere bluegrass events” and features bluegrass, old-time and gospel music, combined with family fun in an entertaining, smoke and alcohol-free environment. Food trucks are lining up in the parking lot across from Kroger and next to Archers Tavern, 2030 East Dorothy Lane, Kettering, for the Food Truck Rally on Dorothy Lane from noon until 7 p.m. Tables, chairs, and music will be provided for the rain-or-shine event and all food trucks accept cash and credit or debit purchases. Similar rallies are planned for April and June.
