Dayton area Saturdays in November Published Nov. 2, 2018 By William Huntington 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – With holidays like Veterans Day and Thanksgiving fast approaching, the Dayton area is responding with a bountiful harvest of activities. They even include many events designed to help ring in the Christmas season. Nov. 3 The Dayton Diabetes Expo, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Dayton Marriott, 1414 S. Patterson Boulevard, Dayton, is two events packed into a half-day and is free, open to the public and no registration is required. Urbana, Ohio’s Urban Loft Tour, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., allows visitors to visit historic Urbana and tour upper floors of downtown buildings. The $15 per person tour includes loft apartments as well as office and commercial spaces. It all begins at the Urbana Gloria Cinema, 216 S. Main Street, Urbana, which is currently under restoration. The tour, which is held in conjunction with the downtown merchant holiday season kick off, is not handicap accessible and no pets are allowed. Model railroad enthusiasts are invited to join the National Model Railroad Association at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 645 Infirmary Road, Dayton, for the 43rd Annual Dayton Train Show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 30 displays, exhibits, dealer tables, hourly door prizes, how-to clinics on train care and model building will be featured. General admission is $7, active military with identification card is $6, children 12 and under are free. Event parking is also free. Nov. 10 Veterans Day at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, 1100 Spaatz St., Wright-Patterson AFB, will feature a Plane Talks event where visitors will have the opportunity to interact with various subject matter experts on aircraft in each of the museum’s four main buildings from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The experts at these talks may include veterans, active duty, former pilots, crew members, engineers, navigators, and more. They will be stationed in the galleries near the aircraft or exhibit that relates to their expertise. Admission is free. The Kettering National A Cappella Festival, held at the James S. Trent Arena, 3301 Shroyer Road, Kettering, is one of the largest weekends of a cappella music nationwide. There will be a Saturday daytime festival, and a Saturday evening concert. Role-player game enthusiasts can attend Dayton’s 6th Annual AcadeCon 2018, at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 East Fifth St, Dayton. The tabletop gaming convention is hosted by the RPG Academy faculty and runs from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., with vendors’ hours from 9 a.m. to 6p.m. The theme is the Year of Community and event details are at www.acadecon.com Nov. 17 The Sugarplum Festival of Trees, at the Dayton Masonic Center, 525 West Riverview Ave, Dayton, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is an annual holiday extravaganza which for many signals the beginning of the holiday season for the Miami Valley. Guests can browse and bid on the beautifully-decorated Christmas trees and pick up some homemade Christmas gifts and decorations including wreaths, ornaments and more. Terrific Women in Giving, an auxiliary of Dayton Children’s Hospital, hosts the festival and proceeds from this event help them their pledge to support mental health services at Dayton Children's. The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, 2600 Deweese Parkway, Dayton, presents the Annual Dayton Science Festival, a unique experience of science and fun, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is an invitation for families to explore hands-on activities, interact with partners and Museum professionals, and much more, for a free day of science and fun. Nov. 24 Its opening weekend for the Ice Rink at Riverscape MetroPark, 111 East Monument Avenue, Dayton, and for the $7 admission, visitors can spend part of the holiday weekend, from 11 a.am, to 10 p.m., having fun and creating lasting memories with friends and family. The holiday lights go on at Clifton Mill, 75 Water St, Clifton, for the Christmas Lights 2018 at Clifton Mill, from 5 to 9 p.m. Billed as “one of the country's finest” with millions of Christmas Lights illuminating the mill, the gorge, the riverbanks, trees and bridges. The cost is $10 per person for everyone age 7 and older. Children 6 and under are admitted free. Downtown Wilmington, Ohio, closes its streets and opens its doors for everyone to see the annual Hometown HoliDazzle Illuminated Parade and Festival from 7 to 9 .pm. Bands, floats and Santa’s sleigh will be featured.
