Focus Week registration open for courses being offered April 24-28 Published April 4, 2017 By Amy Rollins Skywrighter Staff WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Registration is open for the second Focus Week of 2017, scheduled for April 24-28 at the 88th Air Base Wing, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Registration continues until the day before each course is held. The April Focus Week is focused on individual development with the addition of some diversity focused classes. “With a wide variety of classes, there should be something for everyone looking to further develop their skills and knowledge in the workplace,” said Eric Christy, human resources specialist, 88th Force Support Squadron Workforce Development. Select classes continue to be offered through a training exchange partnership with Sinclair Community College as a part of the Air Force Community Partnership Initiative. The goal of this program is to enhance mission viability and improve quality of life for Airmen while implementing collaborative projects that provide mutual value to the government and local communities. The SCC courses offered this Focus Week, with limited seating, will be: Building Trust and Collaboration, April 24, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. – Join in as the four cores of trust (integrity, motive, capabilities and results) are explored and applied to all levels of leadership in the work place. Integrity, trust and honesty are all tightly interwoven into the fabric of a work center as all employees have the ability to lead in different ways within their organizations. The ability to put others before selves, to empathize, seek to understand, build rapport and show concern allows for strong connections with all level of employees and all forms of leadership. In this course, we will assess and develop the effect trust can have in leading co-workers, employees or others to achieve personal, professional and organizational success. Skills for Today’s Workplace, April 27, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. – Cultural competency plays a large role in being able to build relationships, particularly in the context of human resources in businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies that are serving the changing demographics of the Miami Valley. Using experiential activities, this training will help provide individuals the tools they need to meet the needs of their community. Multicultural Communications, April 28, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. – This session is designed to help improve multicultural effectiveness by providing practical skills and information required to cultivate meaningful relationships in a diverse society. Multicultural or cross-cultural communication is essential. The key to understanding is – intent ≠ impact. The goal is realizing that everyone is different and therefore may react to an individual’s behavior, words, tone or body language but not necessarily one’s intentions. The workshop includes experiential learning techniques, small and large group interactions and discussions. A new class on base will be “Dealing with Challenging Interactions,” April 24, 9-10:30 a.m. – Life continually presents us with interpersonal challenges, in the form of different behavioral styles. Assertiveness is not always the norm; aggressive, passive and passive-aggressive styles can be particularly difficult to address. This presentation focuses on ways to deal with various interpersonal approaches, and tips to manage reactions to those styles. Other course offerings are: Time Management: Decision Making, April 25, 8-11 a.m. – This three-hour class will focus on utilizing a six-step approach to improve the quality and timeliness of your decision-making needs. This approach provides a logical and systematic process addressing the critical elements of each decision and steers you clear of erroneous information, leading to a more effective and timely decision. Classroom activities will reinforce use of the six-step approach providing opportunities to practice effective decision making. Civilian Force Development Opportunities, April 26, 1-3 p.m. – This two-hour briefing provided by 88 FSS/FSDED Workforce Development is on the various aspects and options of workforce development from the AFPC level down to the WPAFB level. Improve Your Study Skills, April 27, 9-10 a.m. – If you feel you or your folks would benefit from a proven general study/test-taking skills class that can be applied to Course 14 or 15, CDC’s, college, certification tests and promotion tests. Teaches a method of study meant to transfer information from short-term to long-term memory. Federal Resume Writing, April 28, 8-10:30 a.m. – Learn essential musts for developing compelling and effective resumés to further your career in government service. How To Build A Better Bullet, April 28, 2-3:30 p.m. – This bullet writing class assists in writing military evaluations, civilian appraisals (regular, ACQ Demo, Lab Demo, DPMAPS) and award packages and can help with resumé writing. It introduces a continuous process improvement philosophy necessary for quality bullet writing preparation. In addition, it teaches the framework of a bullet itself. You will receive a challenging exercise to execute what you have learned. Registration is open to all 88 ABW employees, both military and civilian. The wider Wright-Patterson AFB audience is encouraged to attend as space allows. AFLCMC Focus Week registration opens April 10 The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Spring Focus Week sessions will take place April 24-28. Students may participate in these events either in person or via Defense Collaboration System (DCS), allowing AFLCMC to reach numerous geographic locations. Registration opens April 10 for AFLCMC Focus Week and is accomplished through the Acquisition Now Continuous Learning (CL) website. You can search for course offerings by going to Focus Week Registration Website, click on “Apply for a CL Event” and search under AFLCMC Focus Week.
